The day started so well…Sunshine, although still cold, and Joe had lent a Roadbike for me, and the two of us planned to ride through Manhattan, to Coney Island, and back…so we set off, the bike Joe had lent for me was far superior to his, and I zoomed alongside the Hudson River (or was it my superior fitness ?), passing downtown Manhattan, and Battery Park, with views of Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty....around and over the Brooklyn Bridge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn_Bridge into Brooklyn, which was teeming with people – an interesting obstacle course as we flew along !
Once into Brooklyn we went through and past Prospect Park http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prospect_Park_(Brooklyn) along Ocean View Boulevard en route to Coney Island Beach, and the Ocean (Atlantic )...really good, although just before we got there I got a puncture and with no repair kit…we had to walk the final part, and at least get some views of Coney Island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coney_Island, and the Atlantic . It wasn’t exactly how I’d always pictured it-although to be fair, it was winter, and closed !
We then had to work out how to get back, without it being too costly, and I had one of my usual brainwaves- get the train/subway ! We managed to get all the way back to Joe’s apt, phew, saves carrying the bikes, although I wanted some pictures of us crossing Brooklyn Bridge on the way back !...and now ready for a bath !
In the Evening we went to the Blue Smoke bar/restaurant http://jazzstandard.net/ which was already busy, and full at 6-30 p.m.! We stood at the bar until our table was ready, reading the limitless lists of beers, whiskeys and other drinks, and watching other diners tucking in to the BBQ fare ! We had a dinner of ribs, of several sorts, washed down with various beers and key lime pie, followed by a visit downstairs to the ‘Jazz Standard’, a club below, being taken to a front of stage table by the Maitre’D, who must have thought we were somebody else, or famous ! and watched a Jazz trio, whilst sipping cocktails…and home by 11p.m. …and snoozing, ready for an early start the next day !
