well, it was a windy old night, and eventually shortly after 6 a.m. I had to get up to drop the top roof on Wally, and as I looked out a wonderful sight greeted me…the sun was just coming up, in a blaze of colour over the sea, this was the view from my bed… wow, what a way to start the day, and the colours continued sweeping across the sky, enveloping everything it met ,but wait, what does red sky in the morning mean ?…warning ?? I stayed in bed a while longer as the wind increased in strength, and the rain battered Wally…another rainy day methinks !
I later got up, ready for another day of wandering the Northumbrian coast, seeing it’s sights and castles (to keep them Scots out !!)
As i set off from the windswept sight, a short distance down the road I came to Seahouses,http://www.northumberland-coast.co.uk/seahouses.php, many people had told me of their delight at the place, unfortunately on this rainy, windswept day, it didn’t have a great appeal for me, so I continued along the coast road, to the ramparts of Bamburgh castle http://www.bamburghcastle.com/ again a grey rainy sky overhead didn’t convince me to linger, so on I travelled and eventually saw the signs to ‘Holy Island and Lindisfarne’ (same place !) http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/ so I decided ,it being Friday (no meat day !) and I had been to Paradise last week, and twice to Heaven during the week, I should really try out the ‘Holy Island’, and as I swung off the main road, down some country road, it was hard to believe that over 1 million people travel this road each year… fortunately not many today !
I drove over the causeway (the tide being out !), and reached the parking area, reluctantly paying £3 for the privilege.
I decided the chances of rain were about 98% so I put my rain gear on, and leaving Wally marched across the island towards the Priory and area, where I had to pay out another £4-80 ! extortion, just to be allowed onto the grounds of where fervent Christianity had been brought to the shores of England by St Aidan http://www.lindisfarn ….. magnificent church and monastery buildings still remain, of what was once a great area, more so for the spirituality it brought to Great Britain, and signs of the destruction eventually wrought by Henry VIII
There was so much to see in the area, I didn’t even have time to go to see the castle a mile down the road…and the tide was turning, so I had to get off the island before being marooned (and fined !).
I did however manage to call in to the small catholic church of St Aidans http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/religion/andy1.htm a peaceful place in the hustle and bustle of all the visitors.
Then , it was time to go, and find somewhere to stay for a couple of days, and, once again ‘ride out the storm’.
I eventually arrived at the CCC site at Lauders, http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk/siteseeker/aspx/details.aspx?id=6210&returnPage=search.aspx in the Borders of Scotland, where the wind, nor rain had not diminished, but, they found me a patch of stone on which to park Wally, and hook up to some electric…. so, the fire’s on…. and I’m waiting here for the sun to return !!
Goodnight ,try not to let the bugs bite !!
